England made an excellent comeback and defeated Bangladesh by 137 runs in their second match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala, India on Tuesday.
Dawid Malan’s 140 runs was the difference between the two sides as the 36-year-old’s remarkable century helped his side gain an important 137-run victory.
After suffering a heavy defeat in their tournament’s opener, the defending champions needed a massive victory to improve their net run rate (NRR), which they did as Bangladesh were all out for 227 runs in reply to England’s 365-run target.
Litton Das top-scored for the Tigers with 76 off 66 balls, his knock included nine boundaries.
Bangladesh’s top order consisting of Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan, was dismantled by Reece Topley as the pacer registered a crucial 4-43 spell in 10 overs.
Experienced wicketkeeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim, who is playing his fifth World Cup, was the second top scorer for his side with 51 off 61 but his display was not enough in front of the colossal 365-run target.
All of England’s bowlers took at least a wicket with Topley taking four, and Woakes picking two while all of Sam Curran, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone had one to their names.
Batting first, England’s top-order starred and guided their side to a massive total.
Apart from Malan, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root contributed to 52 and 82 runs respectively and played their part in England’s significant win.
England will now play their next World Cup match against Afghanistan on October 15 in Delhi while Bangladesh will take on New Zealand on October 13 on the tricky wicket of Chennai.
